Experiencing life in Germany - Intern Matias Kenney shares his impressions
For seven weeks, Paderborn became his home: Matias Kenney from Finland completed an internship at Lödige Industries in the International Service department as a part of his ICT studies.
Therefore, he assisted our team on an exciting project involving AI cameras for automated parking systems. His responsibilities were diverse, ranging from working with Excel spreadsheets and analyzing data to physically measuring vehicles and testing the parking system in practice.
Apart from the internship he faced a completely new living environment. Especially after work, Matias had many opportunities to get to know German culture and gain new insights. Whether exploring the area or interacting with colleagues, the seven weeks offered him many special experiences.
“Lödige Industries was really helpful to plan my trip and answered all my questions. What I've learned about German culture is that everything is very efficient here.” - Matias Kenney
Hi. I am Matias Kenney. I come from Finland and I am 24 years old. I study ICT which stands for information and communications technology.
I think the whole process started when I started thinking about being abroad while doing an internship. I think everyone should have a phase in their life when they go abroad and do something brand new. But to actually have a project and a company where you can accomplish and do new things is absolutely great and I consider it a big privilege to be here.
Every day it is a little different. You do see a structure going through the whole week. Kind of what you have to do, but every day it is a bit different. It usally starts with looking at your emails and messages, seeing if there are any updates. If not, then I work on documents, like the final documents for our project. Then some presentations we need to do or maybe some updates for Daniel. Then we might have a day when I'm just doing completely these tasks or then we have a day when I have to go physically measure some cars and test the parking system. So there is a lot of variety, which I like.
Sure, the first day I was here I got a tour of the whole office and in the international service department everyone was straight away saying “Hello” and introducing themselves very nicely. In the weeks that I've been working here, anytime I've had to ask any questions, I've always got an answer. And everyone was really polite.
Future interns should come here with an open mind and be willing to carry their own load. Do not be too dependent on other people. In the beginning especially, ask stupid questions if you need to. But try to have an initiative, and if there comes a problem, don't just give the problem to others. Try to find a solution for it in your own terms. It might be wrong but at least you came with a solution, not just the issue.
