Lödige Industries is providing an innovative hybrid solution for the MIZAL Campus at Düsseldorf's Medienhafen, designed by Eller + Eller, combining a conventional underground car park with a fully automated parking system.
About the project and building
Future-oriented companies focus on project-related teamwork to promote new ideas, products and services. This new approach is leading to fundamental changes in the corporate culture, redesign of the work environment and IT infrastructure to best facilitate employee communication and collaboration. In line with this modern thinking approach, the complex will serve conventional parking for cars and bicycles on the first parking level with 241 parking spaces on the one hand, and an innovative and fully automatic parking system, which provides an additional contingent creating about 285 parking spaces on a further 3 levels on the other hand.
Why did developer and architect decide to include an automated parking system?
What were the challenges and benefits at Mizal especially for the customer?
Space restrictions - In order to create the number of parking spaces required for this project, a modern, compact automated system was developed, which provides 285 fully automated parking spaces in addition to the 241 conventional parking spaces. Thanks to the parking system, the entire excavation cube could be reduced and a maximum excavation depth of 13.5m (proximity to the river Rhine) ensured - utilising only 55% of the space required by a conventional parking system. A purely conventional system would therefore not have been possible on the existing footprint. Upon completion in 2021, the project will have a total of 526 parking spaces. In line with the overall concept, the space-efficient automated parking system will leave room for generous outdoor areas, significantly enhancing urban living and work-life-balance.
Peak time parking - Codic was looking for a modern parking system that can handle peak times in the storage and retrieval of vehicles.The space selection is provided by Lödige's intelligent, self-learning material flow system. This technology has mainly been used in publicly accessible parking systems with high parking turnover.
Available and reliable parking - Lödige Industries will also be responsible for the long-term service for the new system. With a term of 15 years, the parking system in Düsseldorf will be remotely monitored by the Lödige Industries Customer Care Centre. If necessary, corrections in the system can be undertaken quickly and efficiently.

Challenges of parking in Mizal
- Space restrictions from surrounding streets and the proximity to the river Rhine make it impossible to provide the required parking spaces by incorporating a conventional car park.
- As Mizal will be serving basically for office purpose and many people will enter and leave the complex at the same time, one major challenges Codic faces, are extreme peak times in occupation of the future car park facility.
- Codic, in the role of project developer, is focusing on modern approaches on creating a work environment and therefore incorporating generous urban living areas into the court. They wanted to remove surface parking on restricted footprint.
Benefits of our solution
- Thanks to the parking system, the entire excavation cube could be reduced and a maximum excavation depth of 13.5m ensured - utilising only 55% of the space required by a conventional parking system.
